Description
Today’s adult learning spaces are richer and more diverse than ever, welcoming learners from varied cultural, linguistic, socio-economic, and migration backgrounds. However, teaching adults in a multicultural setting presents distinct pedagogical and interpersonal challenges: overcoming language barriers, recognizing differing educational traditions, navigating cultural norms, and addressing unconscious biases.
This course is designed for educators, trainers, and facilitators working in adult education (ALE), lifelong learning centers, vocational institutes, and community programs. Participants will explore core principles of intercultural pedagogy, andragogy (adult learning theory), and culturally responsive teaching.
Throughout the training, you will acquire actionable methodologies to differentiate instruction, design collaborative activities that leverage learners’ diverse life experiences as learning assets, and defuse intercultural tension or misunderstandings. By integrating non-violent communication, empathy-driven dialogue, and accessible digital tools, this course equips educators to transform multicultural classrooms into safe spaces of mutual growth, equity, and European values.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand andragogical dynamics: adapt adult learning theories (andragogy) to culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
- Cultivate intercultural competence: identify cultural communication styles, manage implicit biases, and promote inclusive dialogue.
- Apply culturally responsive teaching: design lesson plans and learning activities that validate and integrate learners’ unique cultural backgrounds and prior experiences.
- Overcome language and communication barriers: employ simplified language techniques, multimodal aids, and non-verbal communication strategies to support non-native speakers.
- Manage cross-cultural group dynamics and conflict: implement restorative practices and de-escalation strategies to address sensitive topics and cultural friction constructively.
- Implement differentiated instruction: tailor assessment methods, instructional pace, and tasks to adult learners with uneven starting skills and educational histories.
- Harness inclusive digital tools: utilize digital platforms, translation tools, and collaborative apps that enhance accessibility and engagement for adult learners.
Methodology & Assessment
The course employs an experiential, participant-centered, and collaborative methodology reflecting the principles of adult education:
- Practical Workshops & Simulations: role-playing exercises focusing on typical intercultural classroom scenarios, mediation, and communication breakdowns.
- Case Study Analysis: review of authentic European case studies on migrant integration, language acquisition, and adult literacy.
- Peer Learning & Best Practice Exchange: structured exchanges where participants share challenges, strategies, and success stories from their home institutions.
- Co-creation of Resources: collaborative development of adaptable lesson plans, icebreakers, and intercultural rubrics.
Assessment
Assessment is formative, reflective, and task-oriented. Participants will develop a Multicultural Action Plan (MAP) tailored to their specific adult education institution. Continuous peer and trainer feedback during practical tasks, along with a daily Reflective Learning Log, will help monitor progress and self-awareness throughout the mobility week.

- Open Educational Resources (OER): access to European frameworks (EPALE, Council of Europe Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture – RFCDC) and repository links for further professional development.
