Inquiry-Based Learning For Effective Teaching

This course provides teachers with the knowledge, skills and competences to make learning in the classroom more active, to promote the development of higher order thinking skills, to increase motivation and overall student engagement.

Description

Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) is one of the most effective teaching approaches that is considered as a best practice for quality education in the 21st century. As opposed to traditional, teacher-centered learning, IBL is a student-centered approach where learners are actively engaged in the learning process. Instead of passively receiving knowledge, students are encouraged to ask questions, investigate, experiment, and reflect on what they are learning.

Inquiry based learning involves a process of exploring the natural or material world, leading to making discoveries and rigorously testing those discoveries in the pursuit of new understanding. It is very similar to the scientific method. Other terms used to describe this approach to education include discovery learning, inductive learning, experiential learning and problem-based learning. In the context of education, the primary focus is using inquiry as a strategy for teaching and learning, in which students’ curiosity drives the learning.
