The Classroom as a Community: Cooperative Learning and Conflict Resolution Techniques

Pupils joining hands in a team high five while their teacher watches

Description

Move beyond traditional teaching models and discover the power of a community-based classroom. This 25-hour course focuses on two pillars: cooperative learning and conflict resolution. You will learn how to implement effective group work structures (e.g., Jigsaw, Think-Pair-Share) that promote positive interdependence and individual accountability. We will also equip you with practical, non-punitive strategies for managing classroom conflicts, teaching students skills like active listening, negotiation, and peer mediation. You will leave with a toolkit to build a classroom culture based on mutual respect, shared responsibility, and constructive communication.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the principles of cooperative learning and its benefits for academic and social development.
  • Structure and facilitate a variety of cooperative learning activities effectively.
  • Identify the root causes of common classroom conflicts.
  • Teach and model core conflict resolution skills, including “I-statements” and active listening.
  • Implement restorative practices and peer mediation techniques to foster a more harmonious and responsible classroom community.

Methodology & Assessment

This is a highly experiential course where participants will actively engage in the very techniques they are learning. The methodology is centered on model activities, role-playing conflict scenarios, collaborative problem-solving, and group reflection. You will practice facilitating cooperative tasks and mediating disputes in a supportive environment. Assessment is based on active participation, the design of a cooperative lesson plan, and a demonstration of conflict resolution skills. A final session focuses on creating a step-by-step implementation plan.

Materials, Digital Tools & Other Learning Resources

Participants receive a digital handbook with guides to cooperative learning structures, conflict resolution scripts, classroom posters, and presentations. An online platform will host all materials and facilitate the sharing of best practices among the European educators.
